From the Printing Press to the Prove-It Button

Two hundred and fifty years ago today, a handful of people made an argument to the world and chose to win it with facts. They did not ask to be believed. They did not petition the king politely one more time. They wrote down a list, a public record of specific, checkable grievances, and submitted it to a candid world with a dare: read it, and judge for yourself. Then they printed it by the thousands and let it travel.

Print was the first trust technology. Not because ink is honest, but because the printed word carried its origin with it. A masthead. A byline. A printer's mark. When you held a document you held something with a provenance you could reason about: who made it, where it came from, whether it had been tampered with on the way to your hands. For four centuries that physical chain of custody is what let strangers share facts across distance and time. The medium was the proof.

Then we digitized everything, and quietly threw the proof away.

We gained reach and lost origin

A bit has no origin. A number copied out of a spreadsheet, a quote lifted from a transcript, a screenshot of a vote: the moment it becomes digital it is infinitely copyable, trivially alterable, and carries no memory of where it came from. We built the most powerful distribution system in human history, and in the process we cut every fact loose from its source. The reach went up and to the right. The provenance went to zero.

We noticed the symptoms and misnamed the disease. We called it misinformation. We called it fake news. As if the problem were the content. It was not. The problem was that every digital thing, true and false alike, had been severed from where it came from. A real vote count and an invented one look identical on a screen. The pixels will not tell you which one came from the House Clerk and which one someone made up on the couch.

We solved this thirty years ago. Almost.

Here is the part that still amazes me, because I have spent my career inside it.

We have been able to fix this since the 1990s. Public-key cryptography, digital signatures, the trusted hardware I spent decades building at Wave Systems and beyond: the math to give a digital object a verifiable origin has existed for more than thirty years. A signature does two things, cleanly and permanently. It proves a thing has not been altered, and it proves it came from who it claims to come from. Integrity and origin, provable by anyone, without having to trust the person handing it to you.

We had the cure in the medicine cabinet for thirty years and never took it. We signed code and certificates and a handful of emails. But the facts themselves, the votes, the filings, the words a public official actually published, traveled naked. Not because we could not sign them, but because there was no one on the other end who would bother to check.

That is the quiet truth about signing. A signature is only worth something if someone verifies it, and people do not. We do not inspect cryptographic proofs. We trust mastheads and brands and habits and the vague feeling that a source is respectable. Verification was a button nobody clicked. So for three decades we held the power to prove and had almost no partner willing to do the proving. The infrastructure was finished, waiting for an audience that never showed up.

Then the audience arrived, and it was a machine

Something changed that we are only beginning to understand. The primary reader of the world's information is no longer a person. It is an AI. And an AI will do the one thing humans never would. It will verify at machine speed. It will follow a fact to its source, check a signature, and confirm a record is unaltered, in the time it takes to render a sentence.

Understand what this is not. It is not notarization. A notary stamps a page to record that a signing happened, but the notary rarely reads the document and never checks whether what it claims is true. A notarized signature is theater: someone vouched, nobody verified. Most of what passes for trust online is exactly that kind of theater, a familiar logo, a blue checkmark, an assurance that somewhere, somehow, someone stood behind it. The beauty of mathematics is that it does not vouch. It checks. An AI holding the right proof validates three separate things in a single pass: the integrity of the document, the origin of the document, and the origin of the signer. No witness is required, because the mathematics is the witness.

Artificial intelligence is the partner that digital signing has waited thirty years for. For the first time there is a reader at planetary scale that can check origin on every fact it touches, if we give it facts with an origin to check.

Which brings us to hallucination, the flaw everyone complains about and few diagnose correctly. AI does not hallucinate because it is stupid. It hallucinates because it was raised on an ocean of origin-less text in which a true statement and a fluent, confident, entirely fabricated one are indistinguishable. We handed it a world with the provenance stripped out, then act shocked when it cannot tell a fact from a good-looking lie. It has no way to. Give a model facts that carry their source and their signature, and hallucination stops being fate and becomes a choice.

The prove-it button is coming

Watch closely and you can already see the beginning of it. Ask a modern AI a question and it will increasingly tell you where it got the answer, a list of links, a little bibliography at the bottom. That is progress. Now ask it to prove any single line, and it falls flat. A link is not a proof. It tells you where the model looked, not that what it found is authentic, unaltered, and actually from who it claims. A citation gestures at provenance without ever being provenance.

So here is the work, and here is where we should stop being polite about it. It is not for us to trust a fact because Google returned it, or because Anthropic's model sounded certain when it said it, or because Microsoft indexed it. Those are the mastheads of our age, and a masthead is precisely the thing we should have stopped trusting. The point is never that a number came from Google. The point is that it came from the United States Congress, signed, at the source. Reputation is not proof. A brand is not a source. No aggregator, however large or well-funded, has earned the right to be believed on its say-so.

So we are not asking the platforms to be more careful. We are building the thing that makes their carefulness beside the point. Let the machine verify the fact from origin, every time, and it will not matter whose logo it arrived under. We hold this to be self-evident: a fact you cannot verify is not a fact, it is a rumor with better production values. Raise the depth and the quality of the bibliography until every claim an AI leans on rests on something you can check. When the answer comes from the model's own learning, fine, say so. When it comes from a lookup, from the live world, it should carry its papers. That is the purpose of proof.rootz.global: to be the foundation under the facts an AI relies on. This is the future.

Every AI answer should end in a prove-it button. Ask who represents you, how they voted, where they stand, and next to the answer, a way to walk each fact back to a signed, primary source and confirm it yourself. Not "trust me." Here is the receipt. That button is coming for all of AI. It is the natural end of the arc: print gave facts a physical origin, digital took it away, signing can give it back, and AI is finally the reader that will insist on it.

We do not have to wait for all of it to start with some of it.

Today we start with what we can do

We cannot sign the entire internet yet. So we started where the stakes are highest and the need is impossible to argue with: the facts a democracy runs on.

That is what politics.rootz.global is. Every U.S. official, from town clerk to president. Hundreds of thousands of verified roll-call votes. Their positions, in their own published words. Every record carries its source URL and is cryptographically signed, Ed25519, at the moment we capture it from its government or campaign source. We do not paraphrase, rate, or editorialize. We publish two things and no others: what is in the public record, and what the official published themselves. Each one with an origin that you, or your AI, can verify.

It is free. There is no login. And it is built, on purpose, so that you never have to trust us. You verify the source.

On the 250th anniversary of a document that won its argument by submitting facts to a candid world, that is exactly the right place to begin. The founders submitted their facts and trusted free people to judge. We can finally do the thing they could only dream of. We can submit facts to a candid world and prove them.
